Plain text is a free format that allows you to read documents it is a standardized package. One major example of a text editor is Notepad.  You can create a text file on your computer with a text editor. It comes built in with the Microsoft Windows operating system. Microsoft Windows: Notepad

If you want to write text, write it on notepad it’s the quickest and easiest way possible. Here is how.

  • Hit the start button
  • In the search or run box, type Notepad and then hit enter.

Or

  • Hit the start button.
  • Open All Programs then go to accessories, once there click on the Notepad shortcut.

When Notepad is open, you can create and save your new .txt file!

Mac: TextEdit

TextEdit allows users of Mac to create and edit text files. This comes built in with all of the different versions of macOS and OS X. You can find TextEdit in the applications folder on your Mac personal computer. It is designed to create formatted documents, however you can also create plain documents if you wish to do so. In order for you to be able to do this, launch the program, hit the “Format” menu and click on “Make Plain Text.” Use the “Open” command in the “File” menu to make any changes that you want to on any and all existing documents.

Ubuntu: gEdit

gEdit is a text editor built using LINUX and is tailor made for a desktop environment. If it is not included in your Ubuntu system, you can install this software by either selecting gedit in Synaptic (System → Adminstration → Synaptic Package Manager) or by typing the following command on your Terminal (or ALT+F2):

  • sudo apt-get install gedit

After installation, you will be able to open gEdit by going to Applications → Accessories → Text Editor and start editing and saving new .txt files.
